Year-wise Analysis: Which Topics Are Trending in CBSE Board Exams?
CBSE question papers evolve over time. Some topics gain weightage while others are gradually de-emphasized. Understanding these trends gives you a strategic advantage.
How We Track Trends
KnowZoid's year-wise analysis engine tracks:
- Marks allocated to each topic, year by year
- Number of questions per topic per paper
- New question types that emerge for old topics
- Topics that "cycle" (appear every 2-3 years)
Rising Topics (2022-2025 Trend)
1. Case Study Based Questions
Introduced in 2020, case studies now carry 12-16 marks. They test applied knowledge across multiple topics — especially from Real-Life Applications, Statistics, and Probability.
2. Applications of Trigonometry
This topic has seen a steady increase in marks — from an average of 6 marks (2015-2018) to 10+ marks (2022-2025). CBSE clearly values real-world trigonometry applications.
3. Statistics and Probability
Combined weightage has increased from ~12 marks to ~15 marks over the last 5 years. Ogive and cumulative frequency questions are particularly common now.
4. Surface Areas and Volumes
Combination solid problems are newer and appearing more frequently. Previously, simple cylinder/cone questions dominated; now it's frustum and hemisphere combinations.
Declining Topics
1. Constructions
From 10 marks in older papers to just 3-4 marks now. CBSE seems to be moving away from pure geometrical constructions.
2. Real Numbers (Proofs)
While HCF/LCM application questions remain, pure "prove √2 is irrational" style questions have decreased in frequency.
3. Polynomials (Direct Questions)
Simple "find zeroes of polynomial" questions are less common. They now appear as sub-parts of larger problems or MCQs.
Cyclical Topics (Appear Every 2-3 Years)
Some questions follow a predictable cycle:
- Quadratic word problems involving speed/time: Appeared in 2019, 2021, 2023 — likely in 2025
- Prove tangent properties: Appeared in 2020, 2022, 2024 — might skip 2025
- AP sum problems with real-life context: Very likely in 2025 (last seen 2023)
What This Means for Your Preparation
- Prioritize rising topics: Allocate more time to statistics, case studies, and applications
- Don't ignore cyclical topics: Check our prediction scores to see which cyclical questions are "due"
- Reduce time on declining topics: A basic understanding is enough for constructions and polynomial zeroes
- Practice newer question formats: Case studies require reading comprehension + math — practice this combination
